On waking this a.m. about 6 o'clock I went to James room and found that the nurse had gone so I took his temperature, about 6:30 and found that he had only degree of fever. I saw that it had gone down one degree in 2 hours so I gave him 16 gr. Quinine an left him for chop. After breakfast I went back to see him and found that his fever had risen a little - but I could do nothing for him then, so I went with Mr. C. to the steamer and there I met Messrs. Wescott Brothers - one came out with Morrison & myself from Antwerp the other was to have met us at Las Palmas but arrived 2 days behind time so he came on the Thekla Bolhen and they both stopped at Boma until this ship Teneriff when they came up with the others from Boma. Mr. Wescott had had a slight fever just before leaving Boma & his brother was very careful with him, but the first night they were on board (which was night before last) the other one took fever and is still down, on board ship. I made a small purchase from the store on board, for all the Eng. ships have goods to sell, and there was the custom office to receive the tariff for you have to pay duty on every thing you buy on board. I then came down to Londe & met Mr. & Mrs. Cramer & Mr. Smith, for I had not seen them before and we had a good dinner here I am now. I may be called on any moment to go up and help Bro. C. again with the sick people. About 3 o'clock bro. C. came after me and I went back with him. Messrs. Wescott Bros two men who have come out as missionaries - as far as I know independent, and are going to locate at Lusambe on a branch of the upper Kassai river. One of the men is sick of fever and they are stopping at Mr. Harvey's for the present. I took supper with Bro. C. and am now sitting up with James who still has high fever.

Had a hard time of it last night worked with James until 12 o'clock midnight trying to reduce his fever but could not. I then put him in a cold pack & kept him there for one & ½ hours to no effect seemingly. I then took him out, gave him a sponge bath & put him to bed and awaited result. Temp. same 104° I then gave him 15 grs. Phenocoll, and as soon as he took it reaction set in and I lay down and slept about 2 hours. I got up took his temp.
