Petterson:- I rec'd your letter stating that you would continue to do our little business at Matadi but that you could not do it at the same rate of £25- per annum as before, but would make the price Of course I can not ask you to do the work cheaper for the time since I asked you to continue it. But will ask you, as a friend and brother, to consider, really, the amount you ask for paying out our bills to the State, in the form of customs & to the ch. de Fer for freight &c. Our society can not afford to give its missionaries a salary, or allowance, of more than (£60) Sixty Pounds per annum, and for the extra work it causes your mission, you demand (£50) Fifty Pounds. I hoped to do all the work here that is pay all bills &c. and of course make arrangement with some one at Matadi to Entertain our Missionaries if they go up or down country. But on account of Mrs. Crowley's poor health, we have decided to go home in May or April. So in order to keep things running as they have for so many years and have our little affairs settled at Matadi by the S.M.S. as before, I have deemed it best to ask you if you would not continue our business at the same rate that it has been done for the last two years - say (£25-) Twenty five Pounds per annum and have a written contract as such. It is never necessary for your society to pay out any money in advance for us if you will only let us know the amount needed. I know that after our dear Br. Strandman's death such was the case, but it was not really my fault for I always sent money as soon as I knew what was needed
