Monday Dec. 4 - 1899 - Ia. After a light breakfast I went to the beach with some cakes & news papers for Capt. Jones & I got on board with my wheel & went to Kinshasa. I left the steamer at S.A.B. & went to Belgika. I found the steamer ready to go across the river to Brazzaville & I was invited to go, so I wrote a note to Sophie & went over. I got on shore with my wheel, and a little afterwards the Custom officer came & stopped me & told me I had tres-passed that I had brought a bicycle into French Congo with out declaring it. I was compelled to go to the Custom house & after an explanation the chief of the customs told me it was alright. In the mean time the noon hour had passed, and I had lost my dinner I had some distance then to go to Mr. Greshoff's but there I had a cup of tea & some crackers - which did pretty well. I then went out & called on the different members of the firm & went back to the boat, but it did not attempt to return until after 6 o'clock p.m. when I got back to Kinshasa it was just dark and I had 10 miles to go before I came home. I rode on as best I could about 2/3 of the way but it was too black to ride farther, so I walked a short distance & came to a camp of one senegal & native boys at work for ch. de fer. I asked for a lantern & one was lent me & I got a boy to run along with me & he held the light. I arrived home in fairly good time & had supper & was much refreshed. I retired early and after I did go to sleep I slept pretty well all night. Good night.
