Tuesday Oct. 24 - 1899 Today I went to Kinshasa. Sophie was in bed when I left I went to Dutch house & found Mr. Greshoff would return today from Europe I took over for him a nice little center piece for his dining table which Sophie had made. I ate diner at Gordon's. Started to come home at once as soon as I had eaten but it was so hot I post-poned it for a little & went to the Dutch House again. Mr. Poole asked if I had any eggs, so I came home at once & found Sophie in the midst of school I told her that Mr. G. would be in & his did not have any little dainties for him so she made some doughnuts & I sent over ½ doz eggs. I hope he will get in o.k. & have a good supper — train was late & he no doubt will be tired - good-night-I will go over in the a.m. & see him. Leopoldville Wednesday Oct. 25 - 1899 I went over early this a.m. to Kinshasa, saw Mr. Greshoff Mr. Cooper & Mr. Inkles. Mr. Bissell, director of ch. de fer, offered me a ride over on train but I had not been to Gordon's so I could not go with him. However I went over a short time afterwards I saw Mr. Bissell again at Leopoldville & had a little business chat with him. In p.m. I wrote letters &c. Thursday Oct. 26 - 99 I had the boys plant some corn today get wood &c. Nothing of interest. Friday Oct. 27 - 99 Had the boys get long sticks for braces for the verandah of house. I shall have to make some repairs. Tonight about dark the Hainout came in & tomorrow a.m. we will hear from up river probably. I got a nice shield today. Saturday Oct. 28 - 99 This a.m. early I had a letter from Mr. Joseph Clark of Ikoko, also from Mr. Morgan of Benginda also from Farris of Bellingi all well - Morgan will be down on Peace to-take the place of Mr. Woellings. This p.m. we had an Arab chief Abibu[illegible: unknown] & a sweedish Captain up to tea. Had a very pleasant time. Abibu wore the native Arab dress, sandals & all - While they were here a-Kassai boat came in & I went down to the beach with them & saw the Captain and got mail from Luebe - all-well - but had been having fever - greatly distressed
