I began this a.m. and had the loads taken out of the magazine and weighed. Some of the cases were very heavy, but I think they will go o.k. I wrote some letters to have ready. Nothing of interest today - Good night. I went to the State & had a look around today, but spent most of the time at home writing - as Sophie jumped the hammock and ran away to Kinshasa to spend the day with Mrs. Gordon. Depoka did the ironing Sophie came back just at dark. The Hainaut came in yesterday p.m. and brought us some letters from friends up river. Sophie and I are both well thank God. I hope we can keep so. I had a nice cabbage from a portugese friend today & we cut the head in two & sent ½ with some doughnuts to Mrs. Gordon. You see when we have anything nice we divide with our friends. Nothing much today, but the regular routine of work. This a.m. I went down to the beach & borrowed a canoe and carried my 25 charges down to the beach to be put on the steamer - at once, got the papers signed & all was well. I rec'd a letter from Mr. Harvey, accepting my offer for a house & the rent of these same houses for another year-so I had the boys begin to do some repairing on it at once. Mr. Woolings came in this p.m. The boat left this a.m. for Luebo - 2 passengers the regular routine of business - in the p.m. I went out to do a little business and the judge and two priests came to see me, so Sophie sent for me. I came & we had tea-Nothing of importance. good night This a.m., just after breakfast I was called down to see Mr. Woolings. I found him very sick with fever. I at once diagnosed the case, gave a dose of calomel accompanied with by'carbonate soda. He can not take a purge without making him sick at the stomach, but I gave him this in the name of soda, and he had been quiet and perspiring all day - his temp was 103.8° I gave him
