Henry Reed" Friday Aug. 4ᵗʰ 99 Starting early this a.m. we ran down and arrived at Belobe at 12:30 had a very pleasant little stay of an hour there & left again for Tchimberi where we arrived about 6 p.m. & met Mr. & Mrs. Christopher - we had a nice supper & went back to the boat to sleep - as there was no room ready that we could go into - they are both very kind & hospitable and do all they can to make us have a good time - we will remain here until we can get a boat to go to Leopoldville. Good-night. "Tchimberi" Saturday Aug. 5ᵗʰ 99 We have spent the day very quietly and this p.m. we moved into a nice room & large bed (Mr. Bank's) here will be our quarters until we go to the Pool. Good night "Tchimberi" Sunday Aug. 6 - 99 Had a good night's rest, but Sophie was being chewed up by mosquitoes - fleas or some other insect & did not rest so well. After breakfast cleaned up our room & after a little the chappel bell rung &c. During service we heard the wails of the women in the town as though some one had died. Yes a woman died & the mourners are at work - they go around everywhere crying out - that one of their comrades is dead. Tchimberi Monday Aug. 7 - 99 Mr. Banks left this a.m. with the Reed for Ikoke and from thence to Lulanga - later in the day the Dutch House boat "Henrietta" called at the beach & the capt. was going up to meet the Brazzaville & then come back to Kinshasa - so he told me he would stop when he came back - but that same day the boat came down & did not stop nor even whistle - so we were disappointed. About 9 o'clock this eve. Mrs. Grenfell came down from B.O. in a row boat - 20 girls with her. Tuesday Aug. 8 - 99 Had a white flag put out in case a steamer should pass - I got a piece of ivory from Mr. Christopher & made a very nice little butter knife for Mrs. C. & when Mrs. Grenfell saw it she wanted one too, so I made one for her all well.
