"Belengi" Monday July 31 - 99 I was up very early to see the people off - all well Dr. Dye & wife & Mr. Faris are very good & kind to us. We have had a pleasant day. We expect the Reed or Brabant down to-day or tomorrow and we have to keep in readiness for them. I had a horseback ride this p.m. I also went with Dr. Dye to S.A.B. 2 or 3 miles up. there was a man sick. "Belengi" Tuesday Aug. 1ˢᵗ 99 This a.m.we were getting on so nicely when we heard a boat whistle & next we saw the Reed. Mr. Banks came & we got our things on board - and about 10:30 we left bidding good-bye to our good hostes - the Reed will not go all the way to the Pool - but we will stop at Belobo or Tchimberi until we get an opportunity of an other steamer down. Tonight we camp at a wooding 4 hours above Irebeu & while there Sophie is taken with a chill & high fever. I give her all the attention I can & the perspiration begins to flow & by morning we hope that her temperature will be gone. "S.S. Henry Reed" Wednesday Aug. 2ⁿᵈ 99 Sophie had a hard night - but this a.m. thank God, she is freefrom fever - but is very weak - taking plenty of quinine - eats (scarcely) nothing - we stopped at Irebeu a little while & Mr. Banks took on his boat-then we went on down to New Irebeu where Frank is-there I bought a canee - and am to pay for it in hoes to the amount of 2500 brass rods - the standard of native money. Mr. Banks is taking it down for me at 6 o'clock p.m. we came to Lukelele, when we found Mr. & Mrs. Whitehead of B.M.S. we had a good supper with them and spent a most pleasant evening - about 10 o'clec we bade them good-night & went to the boat. Sophie is still very weak. 750 "S.S. Henry Reed" Thursday Aug. 3ʳᵈ 99 Left Lukelele early - had a good run down river - camped at a wooding & set the men to work. Mr. Banks is very kind to us. He pays no attention to the cooking so I am gen. steward - Mrs. Crowley is stewardess (?) good night.
