been out all night in a canoe coming down river to try to catch the train. Steamer Pioneer of C.B.M. having lodged on a sand bank last night. It came in however, about 10 o'clock this a.m. Mr. MᶜGregor Master - Mr. & Mrs. Nye Mrs. Cole, Mr. Butham on board - five persons going home on this steamer. Mr. Jeffreys & Mr. & Mrs. Fields of B.M.S. went down to Matadi also. About 20 missionaries will sail on the steamer Leopoldville this time for England. Mr. Banks caught a nice fish and sent it up today. Saturday May 13 - 99 I spoke to Mr. MᶜGregor about going up with him on the Pioneer and he will let us know Monday - Mr. Banks with Reed will leave Monday. Mr. & Mrs. Nye came in and called on us this p.m. Mrs. Nye is very nice - MᶜGregor and I went down to the Beach this p.m. He wanted to have a look at the Brabant a large boat belonging to the State. Sunday May 14 - 99 After breakfast I went over to the State place & on the Steamer and invited out quite a number of men they promised to come. I saw some horrible sights - White men drunk - running around crazy bare headed - Men who had been to church too. This afternoon at service there were 25 white people - 3 ladies besides the colored people. Mr. Butham of C.B.M. preached. He says a thing and makes a very long pause. Nkaku had the S.S. service. Mr. Wooling preached this a.m. to the Congo boys. After service this p.m. we took a little walk. Mr. Pinnock & Mr. Gordon came over this a.m. and had dinner with us. Mr. Pinnock stayed all night. Gordon went home. Monday May 15 - 1899 S.S. Hy Reed left this a.m. Early - Mr. & Mrs. James Clark of B.M.S. got on board and will go up as far as Bolobo. The Pioneer will go Wednesday p.m. we have not learned as yet that we are going, but I think at least we are. Mr. Pinnock left for Kinshasa this a.m. on Reed. No train today. Thursday May 16 - 99 About noon today we learned that we were going up to Lake Mautumba to Mr. Joseph Clarks of A.B.M.U. so we will be guests of Mr. MᶜGregor and will not have to
