This a.m. up bright & early - had breakfast before Sophie arose I went to the beach and saw my sick friend & he was better. I fixed some porridge for him & he ate heartily. About 8 o'clock I got on board of a little steam launch no seat - sat on a pile of wood-2 Engineers were very busy all the way pouring on the oil. I never saw so much oil used. I think in the course of an hour & a half they must have used at least 2 gals. oil. Capt. Otto stopped at Gordon's place and put me out. I sat with Jeffry awhile, and after dinner I went to the Dutch House. I came back had tea and walked home. I have sold my bike it was an old clumsy heavy thing and used to tire me to ride it- I went to the beach this a.m. & saw the sick man and he was much better. About 9 o'clock the little steamer came in - some tubs broke at Ndole & it took them all night to fix them. I went with Sophie to be weighed today - can you guess 138 lbs. it is a fact! I weigh 150 - same as I did in America - she will tell you all about it - solid flesh - fat face - broad shoulders &c &c &c. Today, p.m. S.S. Henry Reed of A.B.M.U. came in bringing Mr. and Mrs. Banks & Mr. & Mrs. Billington. Mr. & Mrs. B. & Mrs. Banks are on their way home to England. Mrs. Banks has a nice little baby 2 months old - and she has 4 children at home - she has been in Congo 12 years. Her husband 18 years. They had a nice home at Equator but the society sold it to the Foreign Christian Mission Society (Campelites) Mr. & Mrs. Banks and baby will stay with Mr. Woolings. We perhaps will go up to IKoke-Mr. Joseph Clark's place, on the Reed. This a.m. very early, the party went off, & Mr. Banks was left here alone, a sad man - having parted with his wife and little one. I asked Mr. Banks this a.m. what our trip would cost and he told me 20 dollars each - each way, - for passage besides our board. We concluded we could not go - as we had thought before that we were to go as guests. Just as we got back from the train we met Mr. Harber & Mr. Gilchrist - both of C.B.M. they had
