Leo. Saturday April 29 - 99 This is a day only for getting ready for Sunday. However, we had an invitation to go out on the Pool for a steam boat ride, but we did not feel that we could go to Kinshasa & return for the sake of a few hours pleasure & leave everything undone so we did not go. Sunday April 30 - 99 Mr. W. preached this a.m. I in the p.m. we had quite a congregation of whites - S.S. was well attended. Everything moving on nicely. .B. Monday May 1 - 1899 This a.m. Major Putteny left. By the way, I forgot to mention that he had dinner with us yesterday. Cleaning up around is the general order of the day. I bought a patch of green corn & we will have roasting ears for some days. Come over & have some green corn with us today. Tuesday May 2nd 99 This a.m. I went to Kinshasa on the train. Ate dinner with Gordons - Getting over a fence I tore very badly my nice new trowsers that Sophie had just made for me & today I was wearing them just for show (?) I went to Ndolo in p.m. with Messrs. Howell & Clark to meet the wives of the afore said gentlemen, who had been at home in Eng. for 6 months and just returned to their husbands-with them came Mr. & Mrs. Dodds, a newly married couple & Mr. & Mrs. Whitehead - who have been to Congo before & after a years vacation have just returned. The meeting of the husbands & wives who have been separated so long was rather cool for an American to witness - merely a formal shake hands & then branch off on the topics of the day. I got home at 7 o'clock just before a storm. Wednesday May 3 - 99 Today we waited patiently all the forenoon to receive the mail which came up last night. About noon were given some papers - & some seeds. We thank you for the boston papers & the garden seeds - and Flora for the papers she sent - we have not had a letter from Mother. We rec'd the April No. of Ladies Home Journal - the first we have had this year - Jan. Feb. & Mar. we have missed. Yet we have read them for Mrs. Gordon gets them - & hot hers O.K.
