great astonishment the shoes & the dress goods, cashmere & some other things had gotten wet on board ship. I suppose & the fine piece of woolen goods ruined all the rest came out fairly well. The cakes though, and everything in the tin bread box was alright. I got my wheel too & will have it put up tomorrow D.V. we want to thank you for the nice cakes - & especially I, Crowley, desire to thank Lilla for the one she sent to me - they are very nice. Saturday Jan. 28 - 1899 All the a.m. busy opening boxes &c Mr. Vass put my wheel together about 4 o'clock I took a little spin just to try it & got along nicely. I think it will do me good service. Sunday Jan. 29 - 1899 Mr. Wooding preached to the natives this a.m. I preached to the coast men & whites in the p.m. The day passed off nicely. Monday Jan. 30 - 1899 After breakfast I went to Kinshasa on my bike - did what business there was & got back home by 11 a.m. Had a very pleasant trip. I began building a foul yard - I went ove to the state place as two steamers came in from the Kassai I had a letter from Morrison & from the Westcott Bros. All well - Tuesday Jan. 31 - 1899 This a.m. the commissaire came over to see me & try to arrange the little palava with Mr. Woolings. I called Mr. Woolings in & in a few minutes all was well - & as the expression goes “palava fines" - I gave the Commissaire so American fruit cake & Lemonade & he did justice to both it rained & I lent him my rain coat - I finished making fowl yard and have 30 chickens in it. Wednesday Feb. 13 - 1899 Nothing new has taken place today. Great preparations for the coming of the Gov. General tomorrow, are being made. Thursday Feb. 2 - 1899 I went to the boat today, & the capt. told me there was place for 50 loads so I had the Westcott Bros. loads carried down - 28 - & put on board ville de Bruges - I stayed at the beach until the train came in with gov. then a hand shaking all around.
