Leopoldville was buried at 9 - Madam had been sick for some time this was her 2nd or 3rd time to Congo - but she never was well long at a time - and quite careless too. The Gordons did not come over, but we had a note saying they would come tomorrow, so we killed a goat tonight say - come over & eat dinner with us tomorrow - good night. Saturday Dec. 3rd 1898 We made all preparations this a.m. early - About 10 o'clock the boat came in with Mr. Grenfell, B.M.S. who has been in Africa over 22 years - he is quite gray but looks perfectly healthyMrs. Gordon & Dr. Fleming - Mr. G. could not come--Dr. Fleming pitched in and helped Sophie get dinner. Mrs. Gordon took it easy - Mrs. G. was not feeling strong so we made her be quiet and arranged for her comfort. Well, we had dinner, and in addition to our guests we invited the three bachelors - Woolings, Morrey & Faris - these all live within a few yards of us. At 3:30 o'clock this p.m. we had afternoon tea - English people always have it. The boat took on some loads from Mr. W. and about 5 o'clock she started with her party for Kinshasa. Mr. Grenfell is going to Brazzaville Monday and I shall go with him D.V. to see Mr. Greshoff. We sent some kid & bread to Mr. Woolings for his supper & also to Mr. Fris. Good night. Sunday Dec. 4th 1898 A very nice day. The lord has blest us during another week. The service this a.m. in Congo was by Mr. Woolings--a good attendance. The service this p.m. I had the honor & pleasure of being leader. The black people were fewer in no. but we had two white men. After the service all came to our house & we had a little chat a few minutes. Sophie has a nice Sunday School and it is held at the same hour that we have our English service, so she is deprived of attending it. We will now say good night --with prayers & best wishes we are both in the best of health- and we Hope the Lord will preserve us, continually Monday Dec. 5 - 1898 This a.m. I arose Early - left Sophie in bed - and went t the Depot, boarded the express & went to Kinshasa I foun a man at the Dutch House sick (Mr. Miller) I administered to his wants, had breakfast, and went to Mr. Gordon's where I ate another breakfast.
