Kinshasa Sunday Oct. 2 - 1898 The boys could get no "Quanga" today so had to live on a little pumpkin seed - Had a good service Mr. Gordon is well - this p.m. I wrote a letter to the capt. of the Steamer that is billed for Luebo tomorrow. the capt. ans. very nicely & advised me to take the loads to the landing anyway - so I will do so. I shall have a canoe from Mr. Gordon & one from Mr. d'Angremond with men from both. Monday Oct. 3 - 1898 Up very early had the men & canoes ready & loads in them by 7 o'clock - went to the landing to get the loads on board for the boat was to have arrived at 8 o'clock. But I waited until 11 o'clock before she came. The commissaire was on board & He finally decided to let me have on the loads. I was glad - 52 gone to Luebo. In the p.m. I did not do much for I was very weary. Tuesday Oct. 4 - 1898 Mr. Kiehl came over early & went away to Stanley Falls. Mrs. C. made a nice cake for him - Then later she sent some doughnuts to Mr. d'Angremond. Wednesday Oct. 5 - 1898 Marked up bales & got them ready for moving. A caravan came in & I put them to work - got them over - late in p.m. a car loaded with goods came in for Mr. Gordon - the boys all went & unloaded - had it ready for morning. Thursday Oct. 6 - 1898 After Mr. Gordon had finished I had all my cases taken down & checked & ready to move - fortunately another caravan came in and all my loads will be carried to the Dutch House tomorrow D.V. all well - good night - Stephen & Sophie. I have a boy on watch tonight -- Friday Oct. 7 - 1889 I began my work of carrying the loads this a.m. The men & boys carried all day & only left a few loads for the morning. They rebelled about 6 o'clock and would not carry more for they said they were tired. In 20 minutes they could have finished, but the Congo people never care about finishing anything - If they only had one box left they would let that remain until morning to finish.
