Saturday May 21 - 1898 Today I received a few more loads from "Chemin de Fer du Congo." My head man's time is out to-day and he will be leaving in a few days for his town. He has been with me one year his wife has been with him a little more than ½ the time. I shall probably go to Stanley Pool next Tuesday & be gone about a week as I can not get back sooner-Sophie will keep house by herself & attend to business while I'm gone. My head man Nkaku will accompany me. Now we shall retire - good night Saturday May 22 - 1898 I forgot to mention that my man who has worked for me a year had a hard time to understand that he had not been here 13 months, but finally he was convinced. I forgot also to mention that Mr. & Mrs. Wooding Mr. & Mrs. Crowley & Mr. Morgan all had a most enjoyable time at Mr. Pinnock's today at mid-day meal - continued Sunday May 22 - 1898 I promised Stephen I would keep the journal while he was away, and in starting it I find he has put Saturday's record for Sunday so I will briefly say that on Sunday May 22, he preached in the morning to the natives and in the evening the service was at our home. Monday May 23 - 1898 Very busy today, both of us, preparing for Stephen's departure for Stanley Pool tomorrow, my work being in the Culinary department, - I have made cakes, doughnuts and rolls for his lunch, also to take up to some of Stephen's friends who have to depend on native cooks, it is quite a task to take a trip here for one has to take so much food and bedding, not knowing where they can put up for the night. Tuesday May 24 - 98 Stephen and Nkatu have just gone and I have to do without his care for a week, our first parting. Tonight let the boys stay in an hour after prayers and how they enjoyed it they seem to think I am in their care and are doing nicely. Sophie
