from her sister Flora. My! but wasn't she proud & pleased to get them. I was too. I had a nice letter from Mr. Herron. I also recd a package of Monroe papers, containing the account of the Synod, also one copy of the Ladies Home Journal. Both well. Thursday Feb. 17, 1898 I made a new kitchen for Mrs. C. today and placed the stove in it - it is a great improvement and now she does not have to go up & down steps to the kitchen, to tire her, for the kitchen is just off the diningroom - saving her lots of steps. Our neighbors are very much concerned about us having the kitchen in the house, or a part of the house. They are English, you know and do not understand our American ways. However, they think it must be nice. You see the others all have their kitchen away from the houses, the same as our Southern people who live in the country. Every body came in to see the improvement. When Mrs. Crowley came here, she began to make the nice little dainties we have at home, and these English brethren & sisters never heard of only by reading. Again nice light rolls were made and &c. Now Mrs. C. gets a lot of praise for these new inventions as Mr. Graham calls them, and our neighbors now make doughnuts & rolls & and some other nice things which Mrs. C. has introduced and they think there is nothing like them. We are getting along so nicely and we have some good neighbors and friends. Mrs. C. and I are invited out to dinner tomorrow night with Mrs. Wooding. Mr. Cameron, of B.M.S. from Wathen came in this a.m. and he will dine with them tomorrow night also. We anticipate a nice time and good dinner. Good night. Feb. 12 My Dear Childrens! Take down your geographies and turn to the map of this great Country known as Africa. Down here on the South West coast, find this mighty Congo River. Now follow this great river until you come to Matadi a town at the foot of the Cataracts, the beginning of the Congo Rail Road, and the terminus of Navigation on the lower river. Matadi means stones or rocks, and it is situated on a very stony rocky place. From there look Eas and although it is not on the map, about 114 miles and you will see Tumba, the meaning of which is, a great beetle having huge horns. This place is, as many of you know, the transport station of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission. Here are the transport stations, also, of the Baptist
