been very sick for about aweek and kept getting worse. He would not eat or drink anything and it was a very hard matter to get any medicine down him so I saw that if things went on in the same way much longer, the poor dog would die, & I got him out of his misery at once. This a.m. I went to work doing the necessary things about the place & Mrs. C. did some baking. She made some nice custard and rolls for a sick man. I carried them to him and then went to the market. I bo't some nice sweet potatoes, but they are rather high, for about ½ peck I had to pay 20 cents. Everything in proportion is very high, and unless a person is a good manager and able to exchange either articles or money for what he needs, in the proper economic way, he will soon run aground. I settled a palava also at the market. One boy bo't a squash and one of the soldiers deliberately took it to himself. The boy was one of Mr. Graham's boys so I went at once to his relief and soon had the property restored to its rightful owner. Mr. & Mrs. Wooding went off this p.m. to one of the neighboring towns to stay a day or two and preach the gos-pel. Mr. Morgan is by himself and so will come & eat supper with us tomorrow night. I shot an ox today and tomorrow we will have some nice beef - shall I tell the price of beef here - 35 cents per lb. any part steak, roast or flank, soup bone or what not - all the same. After supper we began reading the presbyterian standards in connexion with the Confession of Faith & Catechism. After our reading, Mr. & Mrs. Graham came over and stayed a while. By the way, I am one third interested in a nice little female donkey, and today she had a colt, but it came premature and did not live ~ it is such a pity too for such animals in this country are very valuable. In America they can be bo't with a song and the purchaser could sing it himself. The little Mexican Jacks & Jennetts that the American people would not have - and could be bo't & sold for $5⁰⁰ a piece, are worth here from $50⁰⁰ to $100⁰⁰. However I managed to get mine or least my interest in mine very cheaply. It seems that more things has happened today than usual, or perhaps I am more in a mood to go into details.
