Thursday Jan 20 - 1898 This a.m. very early, Mr. Graham went to the cemetery and selected a place for the grave. After breakfast, Mr. G. and myself began covering and trimming a little coffin that our carpenter had made. We first made a paste of flour, then took some unbleached domestic and pasted that on the outside of the coffin, then we took some nice muslin that Mrs. Crowley had and fixed the inside nicely, puffing it with cotton lint, then we took some nice cream lace bobinet and doubled it and tacked it on the outside over the unbleached white and made a border on the top and bottom with nice narrow cream silk ribbon. We let about 2 inches of the bobinet hang over the lid from the border, which made it look very lovely. Then we took som lavender ribbon and on the lid we made it thus only better. and more artistically and simetrical. After it was finished I took the coffin over to the house and put the corps into it, and screwed down the cover as it was best that no one should see it. Then I had a small litter made and at 4 o'clock p.m. the bell tolled and all the people at Tumba nearly came out to attend the funeral. Even the catholic priest two small boys carried the corps to the cemetery (no hearse) and Mr. Graham read some scripture from several parts of the bible had a Congo Hymn & an English hymn and he prayed in Congo and made a nice little talk in English. Everything went off nicely. Mr. Silva of Belgika gave us some potatoes and sent up a nice cake to Mrs. O. our neighbors are awfully good. We have fresh meat sometimes and the heart of a nice beef ocassionally. Good night. Friday Jan. 21 - 1898 This morning I went down to Belgika to see a sick man and found him very bad indeed. I came home & had breakfast and went down and helped him as much as I could. I could have done more, but there was a man there who claims to be a doctor and he is the director for the company, and of course I could not do all I wished, but I had my own way in some things and relieved the poor fellow considerably. I had a caravan to load up and by the time I was through it was noon. While we were having our little resafter dinner it began to rain and we had a lovely rain for about 2 hours - the 1st in about 1½ months. I have another caravan in this eve and I will load them up in the a.m. D.V. and start them off. There are a carpenter and a mason here who are on their way to Mr. Verner's station Ndombi, and I will probably send them off tomorrow. We had a nice mess of new potatoes sent in to us
