Holland, 36 Devonshire Road, Blackpool, England. At night on retiring took a dose of sidlets powders and a dose of Pills - did not sleep well.. Nov. 11 - Wednesday Hurriedly arose with pains in my stomach, the results of medicine the previous night. Soon relieved and went up on deck & felt better. The day was spent pleasantly in conversation and reading. Retired early but ship tossed so did not sleep well. Nov. 12 - Thursday Feeling good when I arose, ate heartily - enjoyed the day very much - saw 3 whalers pass our ship - at a distance of about 100 yards away. Monsters they were. In the evening about 8 of us got into a game of "tippet." Ship still rocks and restless night ensues. Nov. 13 - Friday Sun rose very brightly but only to stay out for a short time then was hidden by the clouds. Somewhat of a gloomy day but passed off on board very pleasantly. Only one thing that was grating all the time & that was gambling in the smoking room. Capt. took post. At night played tippet again and later played a game of checkers with Mrs. Meir. I beat her. retired but as usual the sea was rough and ship tossed. Nov. 14 - Saturday Morning dark & gloomy, slightly foggy - damp with a disagreeable cold wind. Nothing of importance took place. passing up and down the deck was the only amusement - which broke the monotony and good exercise. Read memoirs of Sam Lapsley our young missionary very interesting - read also "Sir Uchtest" which I got from Dr. MᶜDonald, our physician, very good, but very light. not much in it. Nov. 15 - Sunday Took some medicine night before and arose with a griping soon relieved however, and Morrison said I had to preach so I began to prepare for that occasion. The ship rocked terribly and at 10:30 a.m. I began the ser-vice had a very good audience. The ship rocked so it threw me somewhat off bal. but I got through very well.
