Thursday Sept. 29 ~ 1898

I forgot to mention that yesterday p.m. I began cutting
my hair - Yes, I myself - the reason is there is no one
of the European people who can cvt hair unless they do

it with a clippers - so when I hd cut as far around as I
could reach I begged Sophie to cut & trim the back of my
head for me. At first she would not & she could not but
I insisted & she yelded - and I have not had a nicer hair
cut since Ive been in Gongo - Well this a.m. we had an
invite out to dinner - You see we have no stove & our
neighbors are considerate - occasionally we are invited
out to get a square meal. I tell you we stow it away
too. But this is what I want to get at. I tried on just
before dinner a nice new pair of tailor made trousers -
and they fitted so perfectly, that I wore them to dinner -
the tailoress was Sophie She had lots of compliments ~
We ate dinner with Mrs. Gordon ~ Mr. Gordon took fever &
is quite ill but we hope he will be O.K. in the aw. -
Mr. Ferris came over from Leopoldvill & will stay with
the Gordons for awhile. After supper we went over to
Gordons & found Mr. G. better. I had two sick men at the
Dutch House, but they are 0.K. now. good night--all well.

Friday Sept 30 - 1898

Mr. Gordon is better. I went to the Dutch House, found a
letter & some other things from Mr. Greshoff. He thanked
Sophie & I knidly for the sweets as he call them. After
dinner Mrs. Gordon came up & invited us down to her house
to supper. It is the birth day of Mr. Farris & we are to
contribute a can of peas - one of peaches & some dough-
nuts. After supper I'll tell you more. We had the supper
it is now after 9 o'clock & we have just come home & will
be in bed shortly. Last night our nice little dog died -
or at least mine because Sophie don't like dogs. That is
the 2nd dog I've had to die - good night all well.

Saturday Oct. 18t 1898

This aem. Mr. Farris went back to Leopoldville I walked
a little distance with him. Did the necessary work about
the place &c - Nothing of importance -
